Aruba Lends Security Expertise to Better Protect Enterprise Customers from Growing Wireless Security Threats

SUNNYVALE, Calif., October 10, 2006 –Aruba Networks, the Mobile Edge Company, today announced that it is sponsoring the Wireless Vulnerabilities and Exploits (WVE) database (www.wve.org), a vendor-neutral, community-based effort to catalog and disseminate information on the rapidly growing and evolving number of wireless security vulnerabilities. Joshua Wright, Aruba’s senior security researcher and a well-known expert on mobile security, will serve on the WVE’s editorial board and provide additional insight and guidance on the organization’s activities.

“Just in the last few months, the enterprise community has seen a dramatic rise in the number and type of wireless security flaws affecting enterprises everywhere,” said Josh Wright. “Until now, there was no centralized public resource for organizations to learn about how to protect themselves against these types of vulnerabilities. As wireless access continues to become the access technology of choice for enterprises, the WVE will increasingly become an invaluable tool for organizations to leverage in securing their networks.”

Although there are many wireline vulnerability databases, until the WVE, little information was disseminated regarding RF/wireless networking security flaws. With the proliferation of myriad wireless technologies from Wi-Fi, GSM, Bluetooth and emerging technologies such as WiMAX and Voice over Wireless LAN (VoWLAN), it rapidly became clear that a separate, centralized database was needed in order to serve as a source of information for enterprises. This lack of information poses a major risk for organizations as they attempt to gain more visibility and control over the threats they are facing.

With the Wireless Vulnerabilities and Exploits database, wireless threats are listed to increase awareness of the risk associated with wireless networking and to make it easier to share data across security-focused organizations. WVE also aims to standardize the names for all publicly known vulnerabilities and security exploits to “normalize” communications across the industry. As a result, organizations are able to better protect themselves by having access to a single point of information for keeping up-to-date on new vulnerabilities as they are discovered and will be able to gain a better understanding of their nature through the detailed explanations of how these vulnerabilities work.

WVE sponsors like Aruba maintain the WVE with support from an Editorial Board that is made up of thought leaders with specific wireless and security domain expertise. In addition to Joshua Wright, Mike Kershaw— a security architect with the Aruba Vulnerability Assessment Team and author of the well-known open source tool Kismet— is an active member of the WVE Editorial Board. Together, the Editorial Board provides impartial technical guidance and support to ensure database objectivity for the benefit of the technical community. Anyone is able to submit entries to be included in the database, which is then reviewed by the Editorial Board. The Editorial Board reviews the submissions, classifies them, and approves them for inclusion.
