Denver Public Schools Manages District-Wide WI-FI Network With Aruba’s AirWave Wireless Management Suite

Centralized Management of 2,400 Cisco Access Points Increases Efficiency, Improves Diagnostics, Provides Detailed Reporting
Sunnyvale, CA, December 9, 2008 – Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN), a global leader in wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions, today announced that Denver Public Schools deployed the AirWave Wireless Management Platform Suite 6.0 to manage the district’s 2,400 Cisco wireless LAN access points spread across 134 buildings. The multi-vendor AirWave suite manages wireless networks from sixteen different vendors, and includes reporting capabilities, Help Desk features, and scalability unavailable from proprietary management systems.

The Denver Public Schools have seen strong growth in the use of wireless networks as schools shift to mobile carts from fixed computer labs. The IT staff expects the user base to expand by more than 40% in the next year alone. The district now has so many wireless network users and applications that wireless has become “mission critical” to the organization. The district initially used the proprietary wireless management solutions provided by the wireless vendor, but it didn’t provide the visibility and control required as the system grew in size.

“The single most important reason we selected the AirWave suite is that it would clearly increase our efficiency through improved diagnostics, advanced troubleshooting, and reporting,” said Bud Bullard, Director of IT for Denver Public Schools. “User calls typically go first to our desktop support team, but wireless issues quickly get escalated to engineering. With the AirWave suite, we can give the help desk more visibility into the wireless network, and enable the support team to resolve problems remotely and more efficiently. With wireless usage increasing so rapidly, we needed this kind of capability to support our users while holding fixed at our existing staff levels.”

The AirWave Wireless Management Platform Suite 6.0 offers key features that are needed by every wireless network yet are mostly missing from proprietary management solutions:

Management efficiency through improved diagnostics, advanced troubleshooting, and reporting;
Visibility into the wireless network that enables the Help Desk to resolve problems remotely and efficiently;
Streamlined performance of routine management tasks such as updating controller configurations and software versions; and
Support for multiple generations of technology, wireless standards, and vendors through a single console interface.
The AirWave suite is a force multiplier for IT organizations – it allows them to better manage their existing wireless investment without adding more staff,” said Bryan Wargo, general manager of Aruba’s network management division. “In uncertain economic times end users need to better leverage their existing IT infrastructure because forklift upgrades are generally not in the cards. The AirWave suite squeezes more from your existing wireless network while providing a migration path to newer technologies – such as 802.11n – on a budget and schedule that works best for you.”
