Classifying Generic Devices and Reclassifying Devices
Devices which ClearPass Device Insight cannot classify using any system rule A rule is a user defined classification set used by the system to classify unknown (generic) devices or reclassify devices. Rule classification overrides system classification. or user defined rule are considered generic devices Generic devices are unknown devices which cannot be classified using any of the system or user defined classification criteria. Generic devices do not contain enough fingerprint data to classify them. Generic devices are grouped into device clusters by similar properties and can then be classified by the user either by assigning a classification set to the device cluster or creating a user defined rule.. ClearPass Device Insight groups these generic devices Generic devices are unknown devices which cannot be classified using any of the system or user defined classification criteria. Generic devices are grouped into device clusters by similar properties and can then be classified by the user either by assigning a classification set to the device cluster or creating a user defined rule. into device clusters A device cluster is a logical group of devices having similar properties. using machine learning clustering. A couple of different methods have been provided for you to classify the generic devices within those device clusters A device cluster is a logical group of devices having similar properties.. The methods are:
- Assign a classification set to the device cluster.
When you assign a classification set to a device cluster, you are manually classifying all of the generic devices contained within that device cluster with that classification set (device category, device family, and device type).
For more information, see:
- Create one or more rules A rule is a user defined classification set used by the system to classify unknown (generic) devices or reclassify devices. Rule classification overrides system classification. and then reclassify those devices in the device cluster. A rule can be created from scratch by selecting the individual device attributes referenced in the device cluster. You will use the dialog to create a rule from scratch. When you open the dialog, the dialog opens and no device attributes are displayed. By clicking the icon you can select the different device attributes from the device cluster you want to include in the rule, enter the values for the attributes, and proceed to specify the classification for the rule. After the rules are created, the devices previously within the device clusters are reclassified using the rule classification (category, family, and type) entered on the rule. Any future devices that are discovered that match the rule conditions are classified using the rule classification you entered when you created the rule.

Reclassifying Devices
ClearPass Device Insight enables you to reclassify a device after it has been previously classified by the system or through a user defined rule A rule is a user defined classification set used by the system to classify unknown (generic) devices or reclassify devices. Rule classification overrides system classification.. To reclassify a device you can create a rule using the device attributes as the template for the rule and then reclassify the device. After the rule is created, any future device that is discovered with the same rule conditions is classified with the rule classification (device category, device family, and device type) that you entered when you created the rule.
You will use the
dialog to create a user defined rule. The dialog is accessed from the dialog or the dialog. After you create the rule, you can:- Immediately reclassify the device.
- Save the rule and then come back later and reclassify multiple devices using the action button located on the .
