Schedule Incremental Backup
An incremental backup is a method chosen when the amount of data is voluminous to do a full backup every day. This is a method for taking daily incremental backups between scheduled full backups, where data backup is taken in chunks and saved to the destination. The incremental backup method saves more than 50% of the time comparatively to a full backup.
Scheduled incremental backup is an optimized method of backing up data for large databases. The backup configuration determines how long is the back up cycle and when the full back up is taken. Based on the defined backup configuration, on the first day of the cycle a full backup is taken and consecutive daily incremental backups are taken until the next full backup day.
For example, consider an incremental backup is scheduled for a monthly cycle of 28 days. Then, a full backup is taken on day one. Next, incremental backup is taken from day 2 to day 28. Lastly, a full backup is taken on day 29.
The following frequency cycles are provided for the incremental backup schedule:
-
Weekly frequency—The full backup occurs once a week on the selected day and the incremental backup is taken consecutively after a successful full backup.
-
Day one—Full backup is taken.
-
Day two to seven—Incremental backup is taken.
-
Day eight—Full backup is taken.
-
-
Biweekly frequency—The full backup occurs once every two weeks on the selected day and the incremental backup is taken consecutively after the successful full backup.
-
Day one—Full backup is taken.
-
Day 2 to day 14—Incremental backup is taken.
-
Day 15—Full backup is taken.
-
Day 16 to day 28—Incremental backup is taken.
-
Day 29—Full backup is taken.
-
-
Monthly frequency—The full backup occurs once a month on the selected day and the incremental backup is taken consecutively after a successful full backup.
-
Day 1—Full backup is taken.
-
Day 2 to day 28th day—Incremental backup is taken.
-
Day 29—Full backup is taken.
-
Scenarios for Incremental Backup Schedule
-
Upgrade, add node, and restore operations—The incremental backup schedule is reset for upgrade, add node, and restore operations. The system restarts the incremental backup cycle in these scenarios. Since full backup must be done on day one as defined in the configuration. Incremental backup does not happen until the define day of full backup.
-
Replace node—The incremental backup schedule is not reset for replace node operation.
